I think you mix up "lines" and "sockets" (in a router or box). You might have only one (or more) telephone sockets in an ATA but have as many lines (= sip accounts - even with different providers) as your ATA allows to configure.make calls on any of the lines with different sip registrars.
You might connect only ONE telephone (physically) to ONE (physical) port of a FRITZbox but use this same phone with up to 10 different "lines" = SIP accounts. I do that - have registered 6 different SIP accounts from 5 different SIP providers in 3 different countries and do maintain 3 different apparently landline numbers in 2 different countries. So people can call me in one country dialling either of my two numbers there (the callers are charged a fee as local call) but my (sole) telephone rings where I live (in Latin America). Same happens if people call from the other country where I can be reached through a local number (for local call charges for the caller either) and the same telephone (remember: I do have only one!) rings here at my home (and -thanks to SIP standard- in my office at the same time).
I'm not sure if you really understand the "miracles" you can do with a good FRITZbox and real internet telephony.
