Lost access to fritz!box... Please HELP!

Hello everyone!


I just bought a german FRITZ!Box Fon ata 1020, Firmware-Version 11.04.01.
While trying to follow to change the language interface from German to English, i managed to ... make fritz unaccesible. No ping, no telnet, no web-interface...

How do i access my fritz now? :noidea:

Could you please, help me? I am desparate!!!!!
Does anyone knows where i can find "recover.exe"? (its not in my installation CD)

Did you try 192.168.178.254 ?

With this IP address you should always get access to the Fritz!Box.

First of all, thank you for your interest!

The things i did with my fritz were:
1) bought it , found out that the interface was in German, and decided to install the English firmware (following the steps described in other theads), so:
2) I enabled TELNET, using the phone command #96*7*
3) using telnet, I gave the command "echo firmware_version avme > /proc/avalanche/env"
4) after that, I was about to give the "recover" command (as described in other theads), but i found out that "recover.exe" was not in my installation CD.

At that time everything was OK.
I turned off fritz and decided to continue later.
The next day, no connection to fritz was available :noidea:

Specificaly:
I have tried the address 192.168.178.254, and 192.168.178.1 and 192.168.179.1, but no results...
I have also tried TELNET, PING and FTP to the addresses above, but ... nothing.....
Finally I have tried to connect via the USB port, but the virtual ethernet card states "Network cable unplugged" .

I think that the fritz units is working, because:
a) The Festnetz LED turns on, when I pick up the analog phone,
b) I have "tone respone" when I use the phone commands (for example, to enable or disable telnet).

Do you have any ideas?

when you use the address 192.168.178.254 did you give your computer the fixed ip of 192.168.178.150?

What threads are you referring to?

When all else fails write to AVM and tell them that you tried to put the english firmware onto your german box. They will send you a recover file which matches your box (german of course). This software is not allowed to be published in the forum. If someone has it and sends it to you privately that is a different thing.

Once you have done that here is the easiest way to change your box to english

I have also tried to set my computer's IP address to 192.168.178.150, but still no connection to 192.168.178.254.

I will send an email to AVM, as you suggested.
Nevertheless, is there anything else, I can try myself?

1. use recover and 11.03.64 avme de image (Austria Switzerland Edition) ...to recover ....then you have an Austria Switzerland Firmware Edition (PC-LAN ------- ATA-WAN )
2. update to an english firmware via webinterface

or you set it back to german

with telnet and "echo firmware_version avm > /proc/avalanche/env"

Bad news for me...

I execute the recover command (thank you MrVenus) to get the message:

recover: Firmware von de.image geladen
recover: Suche FRITZ!Box ...
recover: Keine FRITZ!Box gefunden
recover: error = 1


In english: No FRITZ! Box found

Any ideas??

1. connect PC - LAN with ATA - WAN
2. IP adress on the PC set to 192.168.178 .20 / 255.255.255.0 and close personal firewall
3. reboot fritz ata
4. start recover in dos box
5. start recover again ("F3" und "Enter")
6. start recover again ("F3" und "Enter")
7. start recover again ("F3" und "Enter")


......until box found

After the 50th (!) unsucessful attempt, at last recover worked!
And after that, the English firmware was installed with no problem.

Oh, I can't believe how stupid I can be...

With your valuable advice I managed to gain access to Fritz, but now I have done something very very stupid... just because of my curiosity...

I telnet fritz and typed "nvi /proc/avalanche/env" to check myself if "firmware_version avme" was set.
Obvioucly it was set, so I typed ": q" to exit nvi, but fritz did't return me to the prompt; it shut down telnet (!).

After this, fritz was once again unaccessible :noidea:
I run recover and got the following:

but fritz is still unaccessible (no web, no telnet, no ping, no USB). :noidea:
Even worse, no tone feedback when giving phone commands (f.e. #96*7*), and no LEDs on, when picking up the analog phone. Fritz seems dead...


Guys, sorry to bother you again, but do you have any ideas?

...its very very....scheiße...

It's very easy to corrupt the box with vi or nvi.
It's even faster possible with nvi ! nvi overwrites values also if you did not do any changes.
Only way to stop this: unplug the power _during_ the start of nvi.
You can use nvi to edit the text files at /var/flash/nvi copies the file from flash to /var/tmp/, edit them with vi and
is writing the files back indepentand of the changes.
Never edit files of /proc/* with vi or nvi. Except you want to create a paperweight.Not all commands of vi are available. It's a busybox vi.

I am so sorry to find out so late what damage >>nvi<< can do... :heul:

I cannot ping the box.

I used several times recover, with the current firmware version, and even with a previous one, but the result was absolutely nothing.
The only thing I can do is to ftp 192.168.178.1 at startup (after a plug-out, plug-in reset), and login to adam2.
I tried to manualy update mtd1 and mdt2, but again nothing happens (I suppose that recover does exactly the same thing)

Do you think that uploading the valid mtd3 and mtd4 could help?
Do you know where I can find them?

I have already sent an email to AVM to ask for a recovery utility.
I hope I didn't really screwed up the box...

Idee für den Recovery:
- "Boxtyp" umsetzen auf FritzBox HW Typ 58 ( nach Anmeldung mit telnet (user, passwort,...) "SETENV HWRevision 58" )
- Box nicht neu starten !
- Fritz_Box_ FON.03.23.recover-image.exe
Das Recover sollte evtl. erst den Bootloader updaten.
Dann musst du evtl. die HWRevision noch mal umsetzen und das Tool ein zweites mal starten.

Hello MrVenus,

Thank you for your help, but i think that I have already "killed" my fritz.

I gave up the official recovery tool (after several attempts), and I was trying to make a manual update (see http://www.tecchannel.de/server/linux/438995/index11.html )
as i have successfully done at least 5 times before.

During the upload, ftp got disconnected, and from this point and on Fritz is completely dead :beerdigu: . The "power" LED does not light up and no more FTP to adam2 on startup.

I am giving up. I am returning the box :noidea:


I think it's time to pay for my stupididy...
