Hi all, sorry for the english but you look like the biggest fritzbox related forum around so hopefully someone here knows the answer and what I'm typing :)

I assume there's a way to bridge the fritzbox (I think they all implement RFC 1483), but is there a way to do this and retain the voip functionality?

I've done something similar with a Speedtouch router and it involves bridging via Eth1 and connecting another ethernet cable back to Eth2 (see http://homehubhacks.co.uk/index.php?n=HowTo.Bridge ) so both PSTN calls are available from the DSL port (which is otherwise bridged for ethernet packets) and SIP packets go via eth2 through my main router and back through the bridge.

I've also got a good feeling I should be able to do this on a fritzbox. But my problem right now is, can I do this with only one ethernet port? As I may be able to get a cheap one with only a single eth port, can I bridge it over there and somehow also retain voip functionality? I've got a feeling it's a no go but anyway... I guess I could always continue using my homehub for bridge, then plug in a free pstn line and connect the fritzbox's wan to my WRT54G to retain both pstn and voip from it... but i'm kinda running out of plugs... :)

Thanks, pepsi_max2k

... bridge the fritzbox ... is there a way ... retain the voip functionality? ...
Hi pepsi_max2k, welcome to the forum. Reading German seems to be O.K., otherwise you might not have been able to appreciate the sophistication of this forum? So I am in daubt whether to continue in German.

The fritzbox (FB) (which one?) does not use the expression 'bridging'. Please refer to the product overview for more detail.

FB provides you with WDS for remote WLAN access of another box and with a secon, LAN-attached FB for LAN-extension with WLAN access.
Both ways you can use the same VoIP-Port on either machine.

My only german comes from babelfish :) but i figured it'd be quicker to ask. And I don't have any Fritz!Box right now, I'm just trying to make sure I get the right one :)

Hmm... right, can any Fritz!Box be set up as a bridge (dumb modem) at all? Like be used just as a modem and pass all ethernet data through to a seperate router (I want my WRT54G to have the public WAN IP)? I really need to use it as an ETHoA / IPoA bridge. I actually just searched google specifically for this and can't really find much - surely it must be possible with a bit of telnet config?

Anyway, I better go figure that out before asking anything else, otherwise the rest isn't gonna matter

edit: i'm trying to do something a bit like this (pretend ST7G = FritzBox). eth2 is basically the LAN-attached FB you mentioned, it's the bridging part i don't know if i can do (and if i can do something similar with only one LAN port).

All the demonstrated functions can be satisfied by one single FB alone.
Yes, the FB can work as a modem and pass on an Ethernet connection to any other router via LAN.
You don't need to separate Ethernet from VoIP. FB will prioritise VoIP traffic over data traffic.
Depending on your physical location you might need the Annex A interface, which is available on all FB (7050, 7170, 7270); however, not with all versions of the firmware.

Thanks. I'm not sure if you understood correctly though; I really want to pass on a public IP (eg. 87.86.85....) to a seperate router, not just an ethernet connection via NAT. The reason I want to pass a public IP to my WRT54G is because I have a lot of custom stuff going on in it which really relies on the public IP being there (dyndns, chillispot, port forwarding etc, and I want to avoid double NAT as I have all my main PCs connected to the WRT54G).

If I did this surely VoIP wouldn't work as-is, as all ethernet packets would be passed straight through to the WRT54G and the FritzBox would be invisible to the rest of the LAN, and not accessible to the internet either.

Using an FB without bridging would cause all the problems I mentioned about the WRT54G (and I don't know which FB I'm gonna get yet, so it may have only 1 LAN, no wifi, etc, I just need it for the voip really). My other option is to just use it as an ATA and connect it to my WRT54G, but then I'll have one Speedtouch 7G for modem, one WRT54G for wifi/lan/etc, and one FB for calls. I don't wanna fill my room with routers when 2 can do the job nicely :) (or even 1 if dd-wrt got ported to a useful voip router :( )

Oh and I know about the annex a stuff ;)

Sorry, another question  may as well keep it here as it's english...

Can I use a LAN port as if it's a WAN port? Ie. If my WAN port is malfunctioning, can I still connect a line between the LAN port and another router and maintain voip functionality? I know you can reconfigure things on a WRT54G to do this, just not sure about Fritzbox. I think on the 7170 it's standard to act like this, so maybe others can do it either by default or by a few telnet commands.

Thanks again :) I did read the 7170 before asking and like you say it did say this is possible ("Select the connection type “Internet Connection via LAN 1” in the “Connection” area. Then the LAN 1 port functions as an uplink or WAN port."), but for things like the 7050, 5050, 5124 it doesn't specifically say anything like this.

Pepsi, I was a bit like in your case and got the 7170 wlan. It does all I need, I now got rid of my modem, old ata, and wifi boxes... so much space on the desk now ;-) And also, it uses less power; a huge gain in the long term when you think you leave these things on 24/7.

rofl, I can see i'm gonna have so much fun here when I actually get one of these things :D still, you guys probably still understand me more than the americans  anyone wanna help me learn german? i think i'm gonna need it...

edit: seems the 7050 should do it too - http://forums.blueface.ie/showthread.php?t=87

official AVM support reply, re 7050:
In the latter case, connect the DSL router or cable modem to the LAN A port
of your FRITZ!Box. Next, open the user interface with http://fritz.box and
go to Internet > Account Information > select option "Internet connection
via LAN A".
Please note that this option is only displayed when having enabled the
expert mode (System > Expert Mode > check option "Show expert settings").

I've been using this demo web config as a guide - http://sluzby.volny.cz/img/navody/zarizeni/fritzbox-fon/demo/i-account.htm and the wording is a bit wierd. "Internet connection via LAN A" is pretty obvious, but "Internet connection via LAN" means something completely different to me (ie. you're just not using any authentication, and makes no reference to which ports to use). Oh well, translation fun.

edit 2: 5050 looks possible too:

http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbo...atures#Fritz.Box_Fon_5050_hinter_einem_Router

...it can be found under a features called 'pppoeiface = "eth0";'.
The box must dslmode_bridge run, otherwise looks for dsl to tode...

I think it's a telnet command somewhere, deffinately seems to suggest WAN over one of the LAN ports, and VoIP etc all seem to work fine too. the whole pppoe thing is a bit dodgy; whether it still tries to dial a connection via lan i dunno, but so long as you can assign ports to interfaces it's a good sign :)

I've still found no proof a bridging mode for the modem exists though :(

Indeed! Its a funny language...
Try to search your Town, there are enough Krauts who can teach you...

Edit: For your plan you need this setting to be activated: "No account information required (in accordance with RFC 1483 / RFC 2684)"

BtW, take a look at this AVM-Site!

Pepsi, here you can find a (german) howto for what you would prefer to realize. You have to modify some files on your Box and you need crond running on your Box. (I´m not sure if this is part of the official firware...) These modifications are of course not supported by AVM.

The easier way would be to start with three devices:
modem (you mentioned a Speedtouch 7G) - router (WRT54G) - ATA (FritzBoxFon as ip-client)
Therefor you don´t have to modify anything.

Another option is to modify the FritzBox that way, that you have your "custom stuff" running there. What "custom stuff" do you need? Maybe everything you need is already available, e.g. in freetz!?

OT: Learning German

... anyone wanna help me learn german? i think i'm gonna need it...
[OT]For your German:If you like Harry Potter, then get one of the excellent CDs of one of the Books you know already in English, including the book and listen to it. Rowlings narrative stile might fascinate you even in German.[/OT]

wow, thanks Beetlejuice. babelfish translation doesn't help me much, but it looks like you found the answer :) and god only knows how they have voip still working after bridging the public ip to a seperate router  i *really* need to learn german  (do you guys really like david hasstlehof?)

>> What "custom stuff" do you need?

i think the main hard one to replicate on the fritz would be chillispot. i have it running a custom FON hostspot using chillispot and a few other scripts, and mainly chillispot automatically stops when it spots a drop of IP on the WAN, and with the Linksys having the main public IP on the WAN that helps alot. If it was just an internal local IP on the thing I think chillispot would keep running regardless.

I guess most of the other stuff could be moved over though. I'm just very used to using the linksys/dd-wrt now after a year playing with it, and don't really fancy getting to grips with another router's system/interface/bugs.

But yeah, I think I'm gonna end up just getting one and using it as an ATA. The reason I have my 7G connected straight to the phone line is because it only has one port for both DSL and analogue phone, so if I want analogue *and* voip on it then I need the dsl line plugged in... actually i don't... but I don't have any other ADSL2+ modem... actually no i do now... erm... ok i'm confusing myself. Just nice to do it all with less hardware though, the idea of 2 modem/routers and one router doing what I should be doing on 1 just pains me

>> If you like Harry Potter

oh, please no   :keule:  8)

Woohoo, assuming all goes fine and the thing gets delivered from Germany ok, I'm not a proud owner of a 5050  Actually started getting interested in a Linksys SPA-3102 but they go for around £30 and the 5050 was £20 shipped so... might get one anyway incase the 5050 turns out to be too much hard work. Better start reading some 5050 manuals now though. And learn german  I hear there's a custom made Annex A firmware with English translation for it? Neither are really important right now but if there's any available, links please  And danke all for the help so far (see, i'm learning already  )

edit: hitch 1, seller waits til auction's won then decides to double the postage cost he originally told me. jesus, some people....
edit 2: ooh he's just dropped it again :D good job there's more of you lot that speak english than there are english people who speak german. seriously, of 15 people i emailed on ebay.de only 1 of them didn't reply in english. crazy europeans. you don't need english, just a hand shake and some tea and we're good :p so, hitch 2... how are these phone ports meant to be wired again?

Rapidly going OT... after a week of searching I finally found an english annex A firmware for the 5050; this time y'all gotta learn italian for it ;)

Seriously though, here's a load of 5050 firmwares (enlgish and italian): http://www2.skizzo3000.it/fritz/index.asp?id=14
I don't know translated them (i'm guessing it was fan made :) ) but thanks to whoever did :)

I've also got english instructions from an italian guy (...for a german firmware - oh the lulz) that involves simple info for all the steps you need to do. Check http://www.vocesuip.com/inglese_english_massinge_5050_english_firmware-t8538.0.html;new#new
Basically you just go through steps 1 to 5. Simple. I might add some instructions here for it when I'm done as the only info I could find on a 5050 english firmware before was the sig in massinge's posts  thankfully he's a helpful guy :D
