English firmware for german boxes

I have been following your posts for a while and i believe you could give me a hand with a similar problem.I have done a failed attempt to upgrade the fritz box fon (product code 01036,i can upload to this post a photo of its back plate if this could be useful to someone trying to help me resolve the problem) firmware from German to English (fritz.box_fon.en.06.04.01.image) and afterwards i discovered this forum and all the good stuff in it.During upgrade the INFO led turned on for a while.Afterwards and while the INFO led was still on there was a message in German that couldn't understand a word of it but seem to have two options, propably PROCEED and CANCEL or something like this.I checked the left one and the there happened something i thought was modem reboot : all the fritz leds went on and then off and after that only the power led went on but this time was blinking.I tried to reboot my pc but there was no difference. From this time i have lost communication with the fritz box through the web interface.I managed to connect via telnet and 192.168.178.1 and this is what i get:
2002-09-08 15:01:24 unknown: /var/flash/ar7.cfg:9: member dhcpenabled not found
in ST_topsection ar7cfg
2002-09-08 15:01:24 unknown: /var/flash/ar7.cfg:9: member dhcpenabled not in ar7
cfg, try to recover

I only have USB connection not LAN with the modem .I have already activated telnet through #96*7* and have done what OPENSOFT posted on 04.03.2006, 17:26 but i am doing something wrong from the part he says "Untar the firmware in a directory, i.e. patch:

mkdir patch
cd patch
tar xvf ../firmware.image

you get a ./var directory containing, among other stuff, a script called "install"

edit the script:

vi ./var/install"
and i couldn't edit the script.I also tried to do it with cygwin but also failed.I am still reading posts in this site in order to find a solution but most of them are in German and is time consuming to translate them even through online translation engines.I believe telnet is the way to load the factory default firmware but can't make the damn thing cooperate.I still haven't got any reply from AVM support.Much obliged folks for your time and interest.Special thanks to DARBID and TELEFONICUS for they support.

Step 4 Failed.

haveaniceday schrieb:
Hi to everybody,

I made some small scripts to convert the official english firmware version en.*.04.01.image
for the german Fon, Fon WLAN and Fon ATA

This works without the modification of the box from "avm" to "avme".
The modification avm => avme might generate trouble.
The images generate by the script can be overwritten by the regular german image.

How to do:
  1. "rebrand" the internal settings from 1und1 (UI), AOL,freenet, etc to AVM.
    => Use this file http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=6391&d=1139740176
    from thread http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=68979
  2. download one the official firmware of the international Fritz!Boxes
    - 06 for fon, 08 for Fon WLAN, 11 for Fon Ata
  3. Download the attached script. ( should work with linux or cygwin )
  4. tar xvf fritz_avme_avm.tar
    cd fritz_avme_avm
    ./fritz_avme_avm.sh

This should give an output like:

The checksum can vary. ( different timestamps, etc )
  5. Upload the right *.image file for your box.
    fritz_avme_avm._fon.en.06.04.01.image
    fritz_avme_avm._fon_wlan.en.08.04.01.image
    fritz_avme_avm._fon_ata.en.11.04.01.image
  6. Hope you get enjoy an english interface...

Warning: AVM does not give support. Everything is on your own Risk.
I tested it on my Fon WLAN. Works fine.

Internals: The script set "internally" the avme settings. So german provider menues
might disappear.
- 7050: not official firmware available... ( yet ?)

Best regards,

Haveaniceday

I have managed to download the perl file for the cygwin. Then the script worked perfect.I have uploaded the modified firmware and i now have a full English web interface.Million thanks to all contributed to this effort and especially to HAVEANICEDAY who did all the job. Thanks again.

ignore this - found it at post #3!

I have just done the English conversion on my fritzbox fon wlan - I don't see the option for changing the region or country? Is it a different model you have?

ps. thanks for all your work on this "have a nice day" - this was the only solution that got me to English. It's not that I didn't understand it in German (you can see what's going on) I just KNEW it was possible to change to English!!

bristolbaz schrieb:

It is not the model in my signature. It is a fritzbox fon wlan classic and I have the same firmware you do, 08.04.01. I actully cannot see the pages of the box right now. But I am pretty sure in SYSTEM and then REGIONAL or something like that. AVM forgot Australia when they were doing the list. Now how could that happen? :p

Codecs supported by your english speaking box

To the people that have recently changed their box to english. Does your box support G.729?

Have a nice day. When we put the english firmware onto the box, then the box is an International box. Is that right? I understand that german boxes do not have g.729, but international boxes do have g.729. This means that our boxes that speak english should have G.729 is this correct?

Hi Darbid,

the firmware used is the international firmware. So if international firmware
provides G.729 the mod should do also.

I do not expect AVM to remove codecs, except the disturb or cost licenses,
which might be a lot for all german boxes...

Old firmware required just a configration inside voip.cfg. Did this change ?

My "english config" contains audiocodecs = "PCMA", "G729", "G723", "PCMA", "PCMU";

But I never really worked with the different codecs.

Haveaniceday

Thank you HAND.

To the people who have the english boxes, you use telnet to go into the box and then type "voipd -s" and then "voipd" you will then see a list of available codecs. Like this below

Code:
voipd[7546]: G726-32: 56533 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: G726-40: 70666 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: G726-24: 56533 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: iLBC: 42400 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: PCMA: 98933 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: PCMU: 98933 bits/second (encaplen=14,30ms)
voipd[7546]: G726-32: 63600 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)
voipd[7546]: G726-40: 84800 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)
voipd[7546]: G726-24: 63600 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)
voipd[7546]: iLBC: 63600 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)
voipd[7546]: PCMA: 106000 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)
voipd[7546]: PCMU: 106000 bits/second (encaplen=14,20ms)

So the only problem now is how can I telnet to a box on the other side of the world :)

Oh and HAND I assume that all those codec patches that are in the forum that change the priority selection would probably still work with a classic 08.04.01 English version.

Question

Hi, i've been googling around for an english firmware for my fritz!box 7050

All of you are talking about how did you change it to english, but is for fritz!box fon wlan 7050 or just fritz!box fon wlan??

I've buyed mine from a store on ebay and now they want more 70¤ to change it to international version! plus s&h that is more 30¤...

I use Annex B.

Best Regards.

Most people here are talking about the Fritzbox fon classic. The reason for this is that there is english firmware, which once modified can be put into the german box and it will then speak english. As there is no english firmware update yet for the 7050 the same does not exist for the 7050. If you can live with german for a while then take the german one. I guess that once the english firmware for the 7050 is brought out it will not take long for someone to create a little mod for it.

Thanks for you answer..
I hope not and if i can help with something i'm available.

Just one question more. Isn't it possible to just rip english firmware from an international Fritz!box 7050 ?? or translate it??

If we can enter the box by telnet is possible to make an image of the firmware.
Maybe a solution like this maybe easyer.

Best Regards.

Unfortunately AVM will complain...
They do not allow sharing of Firmware out of their web site.

It's possible from the theory..

Haveaniceday

Seems to work also with official english firmware version en.*.04.02.image
I've flashed my box successfully.

Only one change in script necessary: VERS=04.02

Thanks haveaniceday,
I'm now running the english firmware without any problems!
Althoug I had Perl installed on my Ubuntu Linux machine, I had to install the "libcompress-zlib-perl" package also:

apt-get install libcompress-zlib-perl

One more small question:
Do I have to convert future English firmwares too, or will I be able to upload them to my fritz!box, as it it was international box?

Can anyone that has done an english conversion of a German branded box to Annex A English - write an idiots guide from start to finish ?
I am still unsure exactly what i need to do

The box is original Fon Wlan (firmware AOL 08.03.96)
I know it must be rebranded first , but how ?

Thanks

Doh - didnt realise it was as easy as just uploading the tar file :noidea: to debrand

I was unable to update to *.04.02. I tried both Annex A and Annex B. But as you will see about the script works with one small modification with this firmware update.

Could you please check to see what codecs your box now has. You use telnet to go into the box and then type "voipd -s" and then "voipd" you will then see a list of available codecs. I want to know if G.729 is there.
