Telephone and VOIP

Dear all,
I live in Austria and I have a chello light connection with a TM402B modem.
Is it possible to use a normal telephone also for the VOIP functions?
If not, which kind of hardware do I have to buy?

Hi Andrea,
welcome to the forum!

You cannot directly use a normal telephone for VoIP functions. You will have to buy an adapter. Either an ATA (analogue telephone adapter) or ITA (ISDN telephone adapter), depending on the phone you got.

Hello, thanks for the quick response.
I was asking this question because the TM402B has two connections for normal telephone. In fact, at the moment I am using it also for the normal festnetz calls. The problem is that I don't know how to configure the modem to work as VOIP and if this is possible.
however, any suggestion for tha ATA?

hi

the 2 voice ports on your cable modem only work for voice services offered by chello. there's no way for you to change these ports to a different provider.

with an ATA connected to the ethernet port, this is possible. common ATAs are linksys/sipura or grandstream units. google may help

is there enough bandwidth with the chello "light" service? if you use an ATA, the required bandwidth will limit your internet access, which is different to using the chello voice service.

The bandwidth is enough but with chello light the monthly traffic is limited to 1 Giga. Therefore, within this limit everything is ok, but out of it, it is not possible to use the VOIP.
Another question. In the previous post I read:
"if you use an ATA, the required bandwidth will limit your internet access, which is different to using the chello voice service."
This means that when I use the VOIP the internet connection will be slower?

slower in the meaning that a download takes more time because the bandwidth is reduced (about 90kbps up/down for a G.711 codec) during an open call.

but I would not recommend to go to the bandwidth limits when beeing on a call. due to the lack of QoS you may mess up the speech on your upstream.
