Hello all!

Being a *very* satisfied owned of Box fon products due to their stellar performance in gaming, NAT, P2P and features, I am now considering buying a used 7270 to replace my aging 7140, mainly due to the fact that wifi of the latter is 802.11g only.

I have found one 7270 which branded from 1&1 (German ISP I presume). Looking around in this forum it seems that this can be used in both PSTN and ISDN connections, is that correct?

Furthermore is it possible to both debrand it and switch it to English firmware? If so, are there any specific conditions for these changes to be possible? For example should the existing firmware be no higher than a specific version for example?

Failed to inform that the router after debranding etc will be used at Greece, on my PSTN (Annex A) connection. I do not foresee a technical issue here if this is a universal (ie both PSTN and ISND-compatible model), but then again as a network engineer I've seen stranger things at play...

Thanks in advance for any information provided.

Hello,

first of all you have to know, if it's a 7270 v1, v2 or v3. For the v1 there's only a quite old german firmware and nothing in english. For the v2 and v3 there's an english firmware at ftp://ftp.avm.de/fritz.box/

The 7270 can handle PSTN and ISDN. It should work with Annex A although it's not fully officially supported. It might through some problems with a bad Annex A line.

Thanks for the info my friend.

BTW, how can I tell the version? If it is 1&1-branded, can I check the version of the device without logging in?

The version number appears in the web interface, under the box or write the firmware on it currently is.

Only "7270" is v1. ;)

Look for Serial Nummer on the back of the router it must be higher than xxxx.304.00.000.001 than it is V2 or V3

The different types can be identified by the serial numbers. There is no difference between branded and unbranded models.
The complete list of serial numbers can be shown up here.

I have not bought it yet, the seller told me it is an ISDN model. So there is a chance that it might have problems with my PSTN (Annex A) line, right?

No. It makes no difference, since all Fritzbox 7270 devices are ISDN models.

Thank you all for your extensive information! :)

An update: I just received the device. It is a 1&1 branded V3, with the following details:
* Language: German
* Firmware: 74.04.88 (German)
* Serial number: XXXX.334.00.1XX.YY1

Remember that I have a PSTN line here at Greece. I started to read things in the forum, to check on how to proceed from here. The target was to have:
(1) a router operating in an optimal way for Annex A connectivity (PSTN here)
(2) user interface in English
(3) I do not use NAS services (have a different NAS box), or voip, or DECT devices at home. I do share a canon inkjet printer via USB on my 7140, I just want to have the same thing on the 7270.

From the above two requirements, the 1st and 3rd are mandatory, the 2nd would be nice.

So my question is which firmware would you recommend that satisfies the above mentioned criteria? And how should I go for changing to an English firmware. Sorry for asking the possibly obvious, I am not afraid of reading. I just would like to limit reading to less than 4-5 links.

Thanks in advance for any info provided :)

Thank you both my friends for your fast replies!

In this page, I've found a great howto for doing a conversion to English Annex A for 7170.

Is the procedure similar for 7270? Additionally, can you recommend a target firmware to switch to, that is compatible with Annex A and is in English? At http://www.ip-phone-forum.de/showthread.php?t=205033 there are some 30 firmwares or so, I don't know which one to select here. Please see my comment to koyaanisqatsi below.

Hello

Downgrades for 7270v3
You will find english versions too there.

Are there serious issues in the latest versions, that might make the user want to downgrade to previous versions? I am not interested in features here, the features of my currently-used 7140 are more than ok (bought the 7270 to have better wireless for my 802.11n clients).

Which would be the most stable version (Annex A in mind always) that I could select to have?

click1 than click2

HowTo = for the tool - not for spec. box
in step 7 "Select and download correct firmware"

I had found that information, but my question above "Which would be the most stable version (Annex A in mind always) that I could select to have? " was which specific version would you recommend to flash with the rukernel tool, to have 7270 in Annex A and English.

last FW Version 74.05.51_AnnexA+B international (inkl. eng.) 28.05.2013 (download with the rKT)

All went perfectly, thank you!

Only pity is that I'm losing about 1Mbps of speed (13600 compared to 14600) compared to my oldie 7140 :/

Apart from that, everything's ok, including printer access, awesome!:D
