Help please, I don't speak German..yet, except for a few words.

I have DSL service with T-punkt and am using the T-com Speedport W 700W wireless router with no problem.

Today, I tried to install the Speedport W 100XR as a repeater to extend my range to my top floors of my home.

T-punkt told me to disconnect my PC ethernet line from the router and plug it into the repeater. After doing this I was able to access the configuration menu okay. I then input my SSID and selected a channel number. I saw no option to enter my WPA password when doing this. I then removed the ethernet cable and plugged it back into my router. I then moved my repeater to its location. I attempted to access internet with my wireless laptop. I noticed I now have two SSIDs to choose from. The original signal, which was weak, and a newer signal very strong, but not secure. However, though the signal is strong and it shows my laptop connected, it will not allow me to use the internet.

What am I doing wrong or what have I not forgotten to do?

What can I do to secure my repeater?

thank you,
Greg

Hi Greg, have you tried the hint in my first post ? Here is it again:

If you are using a product from the Speedport series, it should be possible to export the configuration settings from the Speedport and import them into the W100XR.

So, if I've understood that right, you only have to configure your Speedport with the necessary security (best: WPA2 with Pre-shared key), export the settings, import them and the Repeater uses the same parameters as the base station.

Now, your repeater should be secured too.

Then, you asked for translation of the manual. I tried to find an english version, but after several phonecalls with TCom, Fujitsu-Siemens, AVM and Hitachi there is still nothing, only TCom has a manual in german language. You can download it here

But I believe, that you have that already...and this is much to translate, I've downloaded the same file. Perhaps you can tell me the parts you don`t understand, I can´t translate the whole manual :)

Eine Frage an die deutschen Leser: Kennt jemand den Hersteller des Speedport W100XR oder ein identisches Gerät mit englischer Bedienungsanleitung ? AVM behauptet, das Gerät sei nicht von ihnen.

Greetings

Thank you for your help.
As suggested, I would like to try to export these settings from the Speedport 700 and then import them into the Speedport 100, but I don't know how.

1. Can you tell me what German words to select in the Speedport 700 after I access the configuration menu?
2. Can you also tell me what steps to take to import these settings after I've disconnected my PC ethernet cable from the Speedport 700 and then connected the speedport 100 to the ethernet cable and accessed its configuration menu?

Again, thanks for your help.

Greg

Ok, I'll try it:

You said, that your basestation (the Speedport W700V) is working ok and you can access the Internet over WLAN from it. In that case, your settings are correct and you can use them for export.

With the Speedport W700V connected to your PC via LAN-cable:

Enter the configuration program.
Under "Verwaltung" (management) you can find the point: "Laden & sichern"

Click on this and you can see a page divided into to parts. The upper part is for saving and restoring the configuration date of the speedport itself. The second part is for saving and exporting of the WLAN-settings

First, you can save your Speedport W700V settings:
Choose the point "Konfiguration sichern" in the upper menu.

The Router now generates a file named "backup_config.bin". In the window, choose a place to store and save it with a click on "Speichern"

This procedure has now stored the settings for the Speedport, if something goes wrong with it, you can restore the Speedport W700V-settings with it.

Then go back to the menu which is titled: "Sicherheitseinstellungen für WLAN"
This menu is the important one.

There are two points, use "Sichern" to export the settings. This file has to be used for importing in your repeater so save it with a click on "Speichern"

That's all on the Speedport W700V's side. Now, disconnect the W700V from the LAN and connect the W100XR to the LAN.

In the configuration menu go to the point "Laden & Sichern" (same place as before in the Speedport W700V menu)

The next page also looks like the W700V before, but because you have to import the settings first, go to the lower part of the page which is titled "Sicherheitseinstellungen für WLAN"

In the menu choose: "Importieren"

Now, choose the file with the WLAN-settings (the last one from the procedure above). (Click on "Durchsuchen") Open it and click on "OK" to import it.

That's all...

The security setttings from the W700V are now saved in the W100XR and after reconnecting the W700V to the LAN, the access over the repeater (W100XR) should be possible with the same settings as before.

(sorry for the bad english...it's not my native language :) )

And you can do the moderators of the board a favour: Please don't use fullquotes, they don't like it very much :) )

Greetings

Awesome directions

Thanks so much Ernest015. I'll try this tonite. Your directions read like those of an experienced engineer. This was a lot of work on your part and it is greatly appreciated!

As for the full quotes, it was unintentional. I couldn't read the two choices, so I just selected the wrong one. I chose the other this time. Thank you for help. I do not wish to offend.

Did I mention,..."I love Germany!"

Greg

Forgot to mention

Ernest, I forgot to mention. Your English was fantastic. There are Americans I've met whose English was not as clear as yours.

sincerely,
Greg

Ok, I've spent three years in the States (El Paso, Tx.) ...but that was in the eighties :) And the english which I've learned in school is more the british version...sometimes different from the american english, especially in slang or common speech...

But I'm very interested in the result of the procedures above. I'll hope, that works and you can access the Internet via your repeater. I don't know the hardware itself, I only have the two manuals.

Good luck :)

question

Ernest,
Instructions were easy to follow. All almost went according to plan. Export went smooth. I only have a problem trying to import the configuration settings. When importing the saved filed I receive an error exclamation point which states, "Falsches Dateiformat."

Any ideas?

thanks again for your help,
Greg

Hmm, have you used the right file or the right menupoints? The manual says nothing about the filename, but it`s not the file backup_config.bin from the first part.

I made a screenshot from the manual, you have to use the file which is generated in the second half (left screenshot)

For the importing, it's also the second half in the repeaters configuration menu (right screenshot).

Otherwise I've no more ideas.

Greetings
